    Hi Michael Cohen,
As a fellow journalist it was nice to hear you being so passionate about Journalism.
But I have to correct you about what you said on last week podcast (season 5 episode 14).
Journalism is considered the FOURTH estate – not the fifth. In Democracy there are actually only three official estates (or branches of government): Legislative (parliament), Executive (government) and Judicial (the courts). Democracy is kept by each of them running independently of the others, and a system of checks and balances between them.
Journalism or the news media is considered the unofficial fourth estate – as it is also necessary for a functioning democracy. It is a term set in the 18th century.
The FIFTH estate is a relatively new term mostly relating to the non-mainstream media, (like bloggers or wikileaks for example) which does not abide by the same ethic/professional rules mainstream media tends to follow (such as: cross check sources, verification, off the record etc’).
You were mentioning Entertainment News but referring mostly to Gossip news (which is only a brunch of entertainment news). Take a magazine such as “Rolling Stone” for example, a very respected high standard entertainment news magazine, which follows high journalism standards, and I think you will be honored to consider yourself among such.
I myself am not an American, Canadian or from your side of the pond, so please forgive any spelling or grammatical mistakes – it is very late, or actually very early, on my part of the world.
